Strawberry Fields...Forever?

This was the scene in the Oxnard Strawberry fields two days ago.

Don't know if this will affect the prices of strawberries nationwide, but the rains wreaked havoc on the crops. Snatch them up now before collusion sets in!

  • Holy crap, that's a photo straight out of my nightmares.

I will note that this week's crop of berries at the Santa Monica Farmer's Market have been the best of the season.

  • Yeah, I've got more photos and it looks like a pretty bad ding. More rain this Sunay, I think.

  • I feel your pain...but what if that was your cash cow for the year? One day you're looking at fields of "money", then withing 2 days it's all washed away. Not to mention the people that make their living working in the fields... Mother Nature's wrath...

  • yes dan, you're right...a much bigger deal for the farmer/field worker than for my whiny self...thanks for the reminder.

  • Maybe Dan, but I bet they have insurance at least. I don't, so no one is going to show up at my house with fresh strawberries and a note saying "sorry that you had to eat imported berries this year"....

  • Ok people, let's not panic. We'll find strawberries somewhere...some way...OH GOD THERE ARE NO STRAWBERRIES!!! CURSE YOU CRUEL NATURE!

  • Rain, crows, Loctus...anything that ruins a crop blows...
I was talking to my produce vender, (L.A Specialty) and they said that we should notice last week's rain hit this up coming weeks supply. It will be interesting to see the price flux around a high demand berry season right now with Easter coming up followed closely by Mother's day. With MORE rain in the next week or so continuing on through Easter, berry season is going to be off to a rocky start....Will this effect long term supplies? Or are they resiliant enough to produce the crops that this region needs...?
    We shall see...

  • I picked up my usual 3 punnets of organic strawberries at the Studio City markets this morning and their price was very good -- $8.

They start around $10 for 3 at the beginning of the season -- don't think it ever gets below $8, which is excellent value.

So it doesn't appear as if their crop had been affected.
