Gastrologica No Longer with CPN

Gastrologica and CPN have parted ways, so you'll need to update your downloads by going to our feed either directly through iTunes or at Libsyn.

Since we are no longer restricted by the rules of the network, we will be seeing how to roll Playing With Fire into Gastrologica, then ultimately figure which name to go with.

Which, I guess, means we'd like your input! Which name does everyone prefer?

Also, we were delayed on this weeks show because of Dan's holiday, so we're running a re-run of an old March 6th episode until we can drop a new show next week.

  • Is there a reason? Did they boot you out or did you just kind of decide that you were better off with a sole independent show where you can do what you want?

Its kind of interesting, CPN started out with a bang and it was kind of new and exciting. Now I find myslef listening to fewer podcasts. I still love PWF and Hungry Mag, but some of the others have gotten kind of tired. That is not saying I don't enjoy listening to the ReMARKable Palate or Chic or any of the others when the topic interests me, but the only "must listens" are you guys, Hungry Mag, and The Good Beer Show.

  • Oh and I like the Gastroligica name and you already have a theme for that name.

  • I like Gastrologica, I think it's a great brand.

  • I vote for Gastrologica.

  • You should probably stick with Gastrologica because you already have the theme, the Gastroschwag and the email address that reflects the gastro name.
I like the format of the show already, I am curious to know what the "rules" actually were--did you even have rules with PWF?... I am glad you guys are continuing the show w/out CPN...some of their shows make me sleepy anyway. You guys at least sound like you are having a good time.

  • It was a little of both. We had been considering leaving for a while, for exactly what you said, the disparity of themes. While they are mostly stocked with NPR style, serious shows, we were the loud, raunchy (sophomoric, crude) black sheep of the lineup.

Ultimately, they made the final decision, which wasn't a big surprise. Frankly, we were shocked that we were asked to come on board in the first place, it never seemed like a good fit, but we appreciated it and appreciate the audience they delivered. Also, editing two different shows every week was getting too time consuming.

I do have to say we earnestly tried to modify our show just enough to be acceptable without losing our identity, but in the end we clearly had different visions as to what makes a good food show. We will be building on this to bring more things to the public that has our feel and presentation to it. This may include some beer and brewing shows, and we're working on some video ideas right now.

We'll roll everything into Gastrologica moving forward, and concentrate on a single show being our primary public face of Gastro, since there's no need for PWF anymore. It looks like from the feedback here that people like Gastrologica, so it's here to stay! Thank you everyone (so far) for your input.

We know the show has been more off-the-cuff lately because our schedules prohibited us from any serious planning. I moved, Dan went on vacation, Dan's moving this week, we both have full time jobs, he lives in the Valley and I live in Santa Monica. All those things conspired to make the last few shows more impromptu than usual.

Look forward to a new show this coming up week instead of the rerun dreck I had to post this week, and if anyone has any suggestions they'd like us to cover, please send them over! We appreciate your support, and hope to turn Gastrologica into the Comedy Food Juggernaught!

  • Hey Cake!

We have no set rules ourselves, although we've never intentionally 'kicked up' the vulgarity for vulgarity's sake. It is a food show, after all, so I always felt it was counterproductive to do too much of it. CPN definitely had rules they wanted us to adhere to, and we were fine with that, hence just putting out PWF without editorial restraint. In the end, I still don't think it was enough, which is cool, since we're now able to not have to take that into consideration as we're talking. We want to be able to have a regular conversation, just two guys talking.

We've also wanted to capture the attitude of a real commercial kitchen, which is hot, sweaty, male-dominated, vulgar and lewd. To present a restaurant kitchen as a serene, zenlike den of organization like the Food Channel is a total lie. They are chaotic and full of sharp objects and tempers.

Our rule going forward is to give people a kick-ass show that is high energy, funny and informative.

And thanks for the kind words, email me when you're coming to the fair.

  • Jonah and Triple, duly noted!

  • That's great, actaully. I'm definately looking foward to not having to keep two shows on my ipod just to listen to you all. I just recently started listening within the last two weeks and ended up grabbing all the episodes way back to the begining. I'm very much excited that this gives you all the chance to make one food show. Oh, and so I live all the way over on the east coast, actaully all your stories about growing up on the east coast are all familiar because I live in college park. (Actually, I also listen to Don and Mike, who are still on the air) But I don't feel left out like that dufus reviewer guy who said the show was too regional. Not to mention, many episodes have given me the insight to go out and cook something. The time when you talked about ways you get around the dryness of chicken breast got me on a chicken alfredo kick. Then we had all our friends over and I haven't been able to not make it for a couple weeks now... Anywho, great show, and I am super excited about another explicit marker on my podcast list with Gastrologica! Maybe you could ressurect pwf as an outtake episode, playing the clips you eventually leave out but which are really funny. Or let it die, because I suppose that is alot of work. Even the thought of publishing my voice online breaks a sweat.

  • Hey Josh,

I grew up in Silver Spring. How's Ledo Pizza nowadays? Is it still good as it always was? I need to do a writeup comparison of both Ledo and Grotto, but I'll unequivocably say that Grotto is the best goddamn pizza I've ever eaten, and you don't even have to be staggering drunk in Dewey Beach to enjoy it. I even tried to get them to ship me frozen par-baked pizzas but they discontinued the service.

I have a terrible memory, but did I mention on a show somewhere (or in a post) that I interned for Don and Mike? Don's a coke snorting cocksucker, although I feel horrible about his wife. I actually called the house once by accident, and talked to Freda for a minute (their number was similar to the Domino's in Great Falls, where I worked. I had seen it in Buzz Burbank's address book)

Glad you're on board, and glad you'll save the 44 megs on your iPod for a single show!

    Appreciate the kind words!

  • Steve,
Ledo pizza. So I've never had a better pizza in my life. My wife and I live in this apartment complex that's less than a mile away from the original one on 193 near the University. For a while we'd have a large once a week. Neither of us are "huge" eaters but we can each eat a tray of that pizza. So, a comparison would be awesome. But, their service is the worst ever. When I first came down to the college park area, Ledo Pizza was great, and we'd eat there all the time. The last time we actually ate in the restaurant, we were there forever before we even got to eat. I highly reccomend people doing carry-out. What I heard was that management has changed and while the pizza is the same everything else has changed. They even stopped doing free refils on certain sodas, which is pretty much uber-cheap for most restaurants these days.

I didn't know you interned for the Don and Mike show. I like their show, but I have to agree with you on Don being the world's biggest jackass.

I would say that you've brought back memories, but still living here I supppose its you who is doing the remembering. Apparently Ledo is now a franchise business, but the other restaurants are called "Ledo's." The only difference is they use something slighlty different in their pizza. It's hard to explain, but the pizza from the Ledo Pizza just tastes better than the pizza from "Ledo's" Nice thick pepperoni and those little squares... It's a tradition in my family.

Keep up the great work on the show, once again I enjoyed re-listening to the single malt show, and can't wait for a new show next week.

  • Though it's never good to be dumped [even if you see it coming and were thinking of making the split yourself] I can't say I'm especially bummed...once you rolled out PWF I unsubscribed to the CPN because I realized that Gastrolica was the only show I was listening to anymore. If I could get y'all on your own, there was no need to clog up my ipod with 20 other podcasts I wasn't really enjoying. [Oh, and I actually meant to send y'all an ego-boosting email, weeks ago, about my preference for PWF over the other CPN-affiliated 'casts...but I just plum forgot. My bad.]
And re. the name: Hmmmm...Playing with Fire does have a certain ring to it...but Gastrologica was the original, you know? It's how you were first known in podland...

  • How embarrassing. I just realized I managed to totally butcher the show's name in my comment. And I haven't even been drinking! [Much. Beer doesn't count, right?]

By Anonymous J-dub, at 7:16 PM

  • Josh - Yeah, I remember they opened a Ledo's in Fairfax and it was a faint carbon copy of the original. I was just talking with a buddy of mine last night and we remember that Grotto was pretty much the best pizza we've ever had anywhere. Fortunately (unfortunately for us) the family will not expand outside of Delaware and Md. in the Ocean City/Rehobeth beach area to keep the quality control. A few years ago they did actually ship their frozen pies, but stopped that last year. Sucks, I am really jonesing for Grotto.

J-dub Thanks for the kind words, man. We'll be kicking ass in no time. Any affiliation with J-Dub records? The one Matisyahu is on?

  • YOUR FREE FROM THE CHAINS OF CPN!!
FREE AT LAST!!! FREE AT LAST!! LORD ALMIGHTY, FREE AT LAST!!!

I hope that you keep the same format for the podcast that I've grown to love so much.

Oh, and I'm planning on starting a food podcast sometime soon. Any tips?

By Blogger Nick"Dr. Fabulous" Aune, at 2:45 PM

  • Hey Dr.,

Lordy Hallelujah! I think our real fans like you and everyone else that has contributed and listens regularly appreciate us doing an honest show, and not a candy-coated, watered down version.

We're real. What you hear is just us talking honestly about our lives and our love of food. Others may think that's beneath them, but Dan and I aren't elitist, and we don't think food should be elevated or overanalyzed to the point of making the conversation out of reach for the audience. We'll leave that to everyone else. If food becomes too stuffy, you lose the simple enjoyment of it.

I don't even listen to food podcasts -never have- because they all have a phony NPR quality to them. I know whomever is recording it is adopting a personality, sometimes even changing their voice for broadcast.

If you want to start a podcast, I'd say find your voice and attitude, and pursue it honestly. Don't package yourself because you're trying to impress people, show everyone how smart you are, or change who you are behind the mic. Pick a topic you love and go for it. Good equipment helps a lot, if the sound quality isn't there, no matter how valuable your content is, nobody will be able to listen.
